Facebook increases the maximum duration of Reels to 90 seconds


Good news for Facebook fans, the social network has finally aligned itself with Instagram by offering Reels that can last up to 90 seconds, compared to 60 seconds previously.

Meta had extended the length of Reels to 90 seconds on Instagram in the middle of last year, so it was only a matter of time before Facebook also increased the length of the feature. It is now done, the company having announced that videos previously limited to 60 seconds will now be able to reach 90 seconds.

The company made this announcement from its “Meta for Creators” account on Facebook, and took the opportunity to unveil several new features. Among them, we can cite in particular “Grooves”, which automatically aligns and synchronizes movements of the user’s video with the rhythm of the chosen song.

Facebook videos are always shorter than TikTok videos

Meta claims that Reels is the format that is currently experiencing growth, much to the chagrin of Instagram users, who often complain that the platform offers them more videos than photos. The company claims that Reels shares have more than doubled in the past six monthsand so it’s no wonder to see Meta improving the feature by increasing the maximum length of videos.

Facebook will also offer an easy way to generate Reels from your memories. You will also be able to take advantage of popular models. This allows you to replace clips from an existing template with your own clips, just as you might on other applications.

Note that despite the 50% increase in the duration of Reels on Facebook, these still don’t last as long as the videos you can post on TikTok, Meta’s main competitor in this sector. Indeed, since last year, TikTok users can post 10-minute videos, compared to 3 minutes previously.

This attempt to shake TikTok should therefore not really be very conclusive. As a reminder, the Chinese social network is the one on which children and teenagers spend the most time, and this should not change in 2023.
