This Tuesday, September 13, 2022, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced the imminent arrival of community chats on Messenger and in Facebook groups. This feature, inspired by Discord, will allow you to organize discussions involving many people in categories.
We mentioned it in our columns in June 2022. On that date, we learned that Facebook was preparing to copy Discord by developing a brand new interface for groups. The operation of this system was broadly similar to that of Discord, with these different categories, and these channels for text, voice and video chats.
However, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has just announced this Tuesday, September 13, 2022 the imminent arrival of community chats on Messenger and in Facebook groups. As said above, this feature will allow large Messenger groups to organize discussions into categories, including audio and video channels for live chat, admin-only chats, and event channels.
“We’re building community chats as a new way to connect with characters who share your interests. More than a billion people use Messenger to communicate with their friends, and soon you will be able to start Community Chats from Messenger, as well as Facebook groups”, announced the boss of Meta on Facebook.

Discord chats come to Facebook Messenger
As we can see from the screenshots shared by the billionaire, we notice that Facebook groups will now feature several new tabs such as chats or events. In Chats, users will be able to access different channels. As this image of a group dedicated to wakesurfers proves, we notice a category linked to announcements (with a category dedicated to the rules that govern this group), or a Social category which brings together different themes such as “tips and tricks”, the sessions scheduled for this week, or a “Lake” category, probably dedicated to practice in fresh water.
Note that these community chats will come with several moderation tools which will allow administrators to delete messages, block, mute or ban members of a group. In addition, administrators can also set custom criteria to automate moderation (prohibited use of certain terms, insults, etc.).
The feature has entered the testing phase with a large panel of users on Messenger, and it will be extended to Facebook groups in the coming weeks. As a reminder, Facebook recently changed the News Feed to display your friends’ posts in chronological order.
