Facebook Reels arrives in France: what is this feature inspired by TikTok?

Meta announces the launch of Facebook Reels in over 175 countries. A feature largely inspired by TikTok that allows you to create short and entertaining videos. Overview.

Meta has just announced the arrival on Facebook of Reels, short video capsules. A feature that is inspired by, or even copies, very largely the codes of TikTok.

Facebook is no longer the popular social network of his youth and he is well aware of it. The parent company, Meta, announced on February 2 that Facebook was losing users, a first since the creation of the social network in 2004. In the process, the American giant collapsed by more than 20% on Wall Street. Admittedly, Facebook remains the most used social network with 1.929 billion visitors on average each day, but the brand image was getting old. Accused by some young people of being a network of “boomers“, understand a network of rather old people, or by others to be a real personal data vacuum cleaner, the network is trying to reinvent itself.

New features for creators

At a time when TikTok and its short video model is popular with young people, Facebook is launching a similar service. In a statement dated Tuesday, February 22, Meta announces that Reels are deployed in over 175 countries. This new advance allows content creators to produce videos of up to 60 seconds, based on the model of the Instagram twin application.

The tool has existed for some time in the United States, but sees the arrival of new features. Like the “duo” option on TikTok, Facebook is implementing the “remix” function, which allows you to create a video based on an already existing Reel by taking over part or all of the content. Similarly, it is also possible, as on TikTok, to save a “draft” Reel on your phone. Meta also wants to implement an option to create clips,”that will make it easier for Creators who publish live or long-form videos to experiment with different formats“.

A promotion pushed by Facebook

In the wake of the appearance of Reels in several countries since February 22, Facebook will highlight this native content as much as possible. In the “coming weeks“, it will be possible to share Reels in stories, and to edit stories in Reels. The Watch tab, which currently hosts all platform videos, will make room for these new formats. It will be possible to create these mini-movies directly from the Facebook application, the tool will be located at the top of users’ news feed. Internet users who do not wish to benefit from this feature will still find a Reels tab as they browse, between two posts.

Meta also promises to further monetize Facebook Reels, and more ads will be displayed. Inserts that take the form of banners and stickers will pop up everywhere superimposed on the content viewed by the user. Content creators will be able to recover part of the money generated by advertising revenue, and benefit from donations from their fans via a star purchase system. Depending on the number of views, the “creators”, as Meta calls them, can be paid up to $35,000 per month (more than €30,800), according to the American giant.

Meta (Facebook) wants to promote this new feature to keep its users, and compete directly with the Chinese giant TikTok. While more than half of the time users spend on Facebook would be spent on video formats, the Reels, already launched in the United States, would experience “very rapid progress”, according to the social network. Will this code change in the interface give a second wind to Facebook? The next few months will tell.
