India cracks down on internet anonymity, cracks down on services vpn. ExpressVPN prefers to abandon its Indian physical servers rather than submit to the country’s new legislation.

ExpressVPN has made the decision to retire all of its servers physically located in India. The Indian government is trying to end online anonymity and has just passed a law requiring all VPN services to store user data for five years.

A law that goes against ExpressVPN policy

From June 27, 2022, VPN companies must register in India the real name, IP addresses assigned to them, usage patterns and other identifying data of subscribers.

ExpressVPN refuses to comply. Like many platforms of this type, it adopts a policy of not keeping its customers’ logs: that is to say, it does not store any information concerning their activity on the Internet. This promise is a strong marketing argument and could no longer be kept in India under these conditions.

The service explains that it will, however, continue to provide its users with servers giving them IP addresses in India. To do this, it will use virtual servers that will be physically located in Singapore and the United Kingdom.

Virtual servers as a solution

To connect under an Indian IP address, simply select India (via Singapore) or India (via UK) from the list of available servers.

ExpressVPN is familiar with virtual server technology and has been using it extensively for years. Moreover, the platform already offered to connect under an Indian IP address from a server located in the United Kingdom. This system allows the very many Indians living across the Channel to access content from their country while maintaining good performance, since the physical server is located close to them and not at the other end of the world.

Users living in India and who wish to remain localized in India in their navigation will on the other hand have to accept the idea of a drop in performance and above all an increase in latency, since the servers will be much further away than then.
