After limiting the amount of files that can be stored in a Drive account, Google decided to backtrack.

Faced with the outcry, Google decided to do an about-face. In a tweet, the official Google Drive account explains that this change impacted few users and that it was deployed to optimize and stabilize the performance of the service. They nevertheless decided to go back, there is no longer a maximum amount of files that can be stored on a Drive account.
We recently rolled out a system update to Drive item limits to preserve stability and optimize performance. While this impacted only a small number of people, we are rolling back this change as we explore alternate approaches to ensure a great experience for all.

Google Drive is a popular cloud storage service. This service would have nearly 30% market share, which is huge. However, a new limitation has recently come to light: Google Drive imposes a new limit on the total number of files that can be stored, even on accounts with large storage.
According Ars Technica, however, this issue should only affect a small number of users. In February, Google introduced a limit change for files added to Google Drive: you will no longer be able to store more than 5 million files, regardless of the available storage space in GB / TB on the account.
Google did not communicate on this subject. Therefore, users who received a message asking them to delete files from their Google Drive accounts thought it was a bug. Many errors and problem reports have been reported, especially on Reddit and in theIssue Tracker from Google, since mid-February.
It does not affect many users
Google Drive users are complaining that they suddenly get a message that the ” creation limit has been reached. It was absolutely necessary to delete files to add new ones. This new limit concerns both Google Workspace and Google One. Note, however, that this limit does not take into account file size or type, just the amount of files in your online storage space. This also includes items stored in the Recycle Bin (automatically emptied every 30 days).
Google has since responded to the error messages and clarified that this is not a bug. This is a protective measure to prevent abuse of the system, which could compromise its stability and security.
