Faced with the explosion of costs, the puzzle for elected officials to keep swimming pools open


INVESTIGATION – In the midst of the energy crisis, this very popular but very energy-intensive equipment is putting many local authorities in difficulty.

Announced on Monday, the closure of around thirty swimming pools managed by the company Vert Marine on behalf of local public actors has triggered the anger of the elected officials concerned. Many cities such as Limoges, Granville Terre et mer or Nogent-le-Rotrou have not hidden their concerns, accusing the company of evading its contractual obligations. For its part, the company explains that the rise in the cost of energy, over the past few months, has weighed heavily on its accounts: “the annual energy budget explodes, from 15 to 100 million euros“, she pleads in particular.

Striking, this case is above all representative of the major difficulties encountered by swimming pools and aquatic establishments in recent months, which have made local elected officials fear closures, or, at the very least, restrictions on use. Across France, the explosion in operating costs is turning into a headache for local elected officials with limited room for manoeuvre, sometimes reduced to making penny-pinching savings…
