Bad player at AMD? To highlight its graphics cardsthe question of 12/16 GB of video memory is underlined.

Just tested in our columns, the GeForce RTX 4070 may be good news for gamers, but it is definitely a bad sign for AMD, which is letting its marketing department go on the offensive.

Using video memory a little slower than that used by NVIDIA (GDDR6 vs GDDR6X), AMD has always been keen to highlight the amount of VRAM integrated into its graphics cards.

Let’s recognize that at this level, AMD is more generous than NVIDIA, and when the Radeon RX 6800 has 16 GB of video memory, you have to be satisfied with 12 GB on the GeForce RTX 3080. This is a constant that is found with the current generation, as AMD rightly explains.

Thus, the Radeon RX 7900XTX has 24 GB of GDDR6, and you have to turn to the GeForce RTX 4090, not far from 600 euros more expensive, to find such a quantity of memory from NVIDIA. The Radeon RX 7900XT still has 20 GB, compared to the 16 GB of the GeForce RTX 4080.

A target error?

Chance of the calendar (and the marmot, she puts the chocolate in the aluminum foil), AMD chose the day before the launch of the GeForce RTX 4070 to put a layer on it and insist on the correct positioning of its cards.

It is true that, as AMD explains, some games have large video memory requirements. So, Hogwarts Legacy And Resident Evil 4 at 2160p with ray tracing enabled is approaching the limits of graphics cards. It is respectively about 15.5 and 17.5 GB of monopolized.

AMD also takes the example of The Last of Us Part I which, in 2160p but without ray tracing, requires the trifle of 11.2 GB. Still without ray tracing, Resident Evil 4 still monopolizes 15.2 GB. It is therefore very clear that modern games cannot be satisfied with 8 GB of VRAM.

However, where AMD misses the target is that no GeForce RTX 4000 card has been released with less than 12 GB of video memory. The RTX 4070 is so equipped, and if these 12 GB may be too tight in 2160p, it is not a definition targeted by NVIDIA.

As it stands, most GPUs have enough VRAM for whatever definition they’re most comfortable with. This is again the case with the RTX 4070 and 1440p. Of course, it will be necessary to be wary of the release of even less expensive models.
