After a launch this 1er December in France, we toured the new SVoD platform what Paramount+ is.

There is good, and less good.

A serious competitor to Netflix and company?

In a context where users are less and less motivated to subscribe to multiple SVoD platforms at rising prices, today comes Paramount+ (formerly known as CBS All Access). Launched across the Atlantic in March 2021, this service is billed at 7.99 euros per month (or 79.99 per year) and is accessible both on the Web and on mobile. A free 7-day trial offer is also included. Note that if you are a Canal+ subscriber with the Limited Series offer, Paramount+ is already integrated into it at no extra cost alongside Disney+.

With this price, its home page and more generally its interface, Paramount+ is more of a competitor to Disney+ than to Netflix or Prime Video. Indeed, colored menus allow, after having selected a classic profile, to display the series and films according to the channels of the group from which they come: Showtime, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nickelodeon Junior, Smithsonian Channel and original content from Paramount+. These “brands” are also accessible at the top of the interface, which separates series and films.

The few basic options offered will not disorient those who use other services (parental control, suggestions, list, Chromecast, local downloading of episodes on mobile, etc.). On the other hand, note the absence of 4K or even English subtitles. A serious shortcoming that we hope will be filled in the future.

A nice catalog, but still incomplete

Regarding the original content of Paramount +, we can notably mention the series Halo and the series star trek (Discovery, Strange New World and Prodigy). If you had started Star Trek: Discovery on Netflix, so this is the place to go now. Picard seems to be staying at Prime Video for the time being.

On the Showtime side, despite some big holes in the catalog (the time to recover the broadcasting rights from the competition, like Homeland to Disney+) there is no shortage of quality series. dexter (and its strong sequel New Blood), kidding, Ray Donovan, Twin Peaks or Californication are notably part of it.

At Comedy Central, South Park (including the latest special episodes) is obviously there. The MTV section mainly offers reality TV, while the Smithsonian Channel focuses on documentaries and investigations. Finally, Nickelodeon will especially appeal to (big) children with Avatar, Spongebob and many youth programs.

Regarding the films, many unknown or average feature films rub shoulders with a few classics, such as À Pursuit of Red October, Cluedo (yes), spongebob the movie (yes again), Cloverfield or the sagas IndianaJones and The Godfather.

Disney+

  • Disney classics in one place
  • Exclusive Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars series
  • A very attractive price

It was highly anticipated and did not disappoint. Disney+ is not a Netflix rival but a complementary offer, geared particularly towards children and more broadly towards the family. The Star universe, meanwhile, remains the poor relation of the platform and will require several years of work to catch up with its competitors.
