Factbox-Seven key races in Georgia, Alabama midterm primaries, Texas runoff

Arkansas and Minnesota also held nomination races, while Texas held a runoff for unresolved races in the state’s March 1 primaries. Here are seven key races:

DAVID LOST LOST BIG FACE BRIAN KEMP

Republican Governor of Georgia Brian Kemp easily beat his Trump-backed challenger, former US senator David Perdue, dealing another blow to Trump’s approval power. Perdue wasn’t even able to force a runoff with Kemp, who had incurred Trump’s ire by refusing to help the former president’s effort to reverse Trump’s 2020 loss in the ‘tat. Kemp will face Democrat Stacey Abrams in what is expected to be a close contest in November.

HERSCHEL WALKER’S CANDIDACY FOR THE UNITED STATES SNAT

Also in Georgia, Trump-backed Herschel Walker won the Republican primary to face Democratic US Senator Raphael Warnock in November. Walker, a former professional soccer player with little political experience, was on course to win more than 50 percent of the Republican vote in a six-person field, according to Edison Research projections. November’s competition against Warnock is widely considered a draw.

MORE REVENGE: HICE VS RAFFENSPERGER

As in the race against Kemp, Trump has also backed a challenger to Republican Secretary of State for Georgia, Brad Raffensperger, on the grounds that he has not done enough to support his false claims that the 2020 presidential election will was stolen. Trump-backed U.S. Representative Jody Hice, who has moved closer to Raffensperger in recent polls, could be Trump’s best chance of ousting an incumbent in Georgia.

DMOCRATIC DUEL: BOURDEAUX VS MCBATH

Georgia’s newly drawn 7th Congressional District pitted two Democratic representatives from the United States – Carolyn Bourdeaux and Lucy McBath. Bourdeaux was the only Democrat to flip a Republican seat in the House of Representatives in the November 2020 election, while McBath was a proponent of gun control before winning a Congressional seat in 2018. The 7th Congressional District is strongly Democratic .

PAXTON SURVIVES NEW

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has already won a re-election campaign since being indicted in 2015 for stock market fraud in the state. On Tuesday, he won the Republican nomination to defend his seat again in November, beating state lands commissioner George P. Bush in a runoff after neither got 50% votes in the March 1 primary. Bush is the grandson of former President George HW Bush.

MO BROOKS HOLDS ON

US Representative Mo Brooks, a Republican troublemaker from Alabama, has had a recent uptick in the polls ahead of his bid to return to the US Senate. He was an early supporter of Trump, but the former president withdrew his support for the then-struggling Brooks campaign in March after the latter told readers in Alabama that it was time to turning the page on Trump’s false claims about a stolen election. Katie Britt, former chief of staff to outgoing US senator Richard Shelby, is still the frontrunner, but Brooks has made a run of it.

DMOCRATE MODR VS PROGRESSIVE CHALLENGER

US Representative Henry Cuellar of Texas, a moderate Democrat, took on progressive opponent Jessica Cisneros in a race for the party’s nomination after neither got 50 percent in the March 1 primaries. The winner will enter one of the few competitive Texas House of Representatives races in November. Cuellar is the only House Democrat who opposes abortion rights, which Cisneros attacked along with his opposition to legislation making it easier for workers to get union representation.
