BKA assigns almost 600 criminal offenses to the last generation

The last generation makes the headlines with their protests against climate change. They commit crimes – in hundreds, as a new situation report by the BKA shows.

The activists of the climate protection group “Last Generation” are attributed 580 crimes. “The Federal Criminal Police Office has created a nationwide picture of the situation for the first time,” Interior Minister Nancy Faeser told the “Bild am Sonntag”. “580 crimes can be attributed to the ‘last generation’ since the beginning of 2022, 740 people have come to the attention of the police.”

Above all, it is about coercion and property damage, Faeser told the newspaper. The SPD politician sharply criticized the protest against “Bild am Sonntag”. “We do not accept that activists violate the rights of others,” she said. “It doesn’t help climate protection at all, on the contrary: the activists are massively damaging acceptance. We see in many places that the police intervene and activists end up in court.”

But there are differences between criminals and extremists, she continued. Last Generation activists regularly tape themselves to streets, blocking traffic or daubing artwork to draw attention to their demands. Just last Thursday, an activist from the last generation was fined 400 euros by the Hamburg District Court after a protest in the Audimax of Hamburg University for damage to property.

The group sees itself as the last generation before the tipping points – points at which a cascading worsening of the climate crisis will start if they are crossed.
