EU foreign policy chief: “The world has failed miserably”

There has been no solution to the Middle East conflict for decades. The EU foreign policy chief Borrell admits that this is also a failure of the international community. At the same time, he distances himself from the Israeli military’s call for a mass evacuation of the northern Gaza Strip.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has accused the international community of making mistakes in its handling of a potential two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians. “The world has failed miserably; 30 years ago there was no success with this two-state solution,” said Borrell in Beijing. The Spaniard also admitted that although two separate states for Israelis and Palestinians were a desirable goal for the future, the ongoing conflict could not be solved by this.

Borrell spoke to Foreign Minister Wang Yi in the Chinese capital about international security issues. “We are currently experiencing a terrible humanitarian situation in Gaza,” said Borrell. He once again supported the position of the UN, which had publicly distanced itself from the Israeli military’s call for a mass evacuation of the northern Gaza Strip to the south. So many people couldn’t set off in such a short time, it was impossible, said the 76-year-old.

Israel has the right to defend itself, emphasized Borrell. However, this right must be exercised in accordance with international law. Asked whether he had asked China to use its influence in the Middle East, Borrell said: “Certainly we have talked about what each of us can do to try to deal with the situation.”

The People’s Republic tries to maintain its neutral position and maintain good relations with both Israel and the Palestinians. China has not yet condemned the Hamas attacks last weekend; instead, it has only criticized the fact that civilians lost their lives in the conflict.
