Forget Harry Potter and Hunger Games, the adaptation of the Children of Blood and Bone phenomenon book is about to land in cinemas after a bidding war between several studios and streaming platforms.
Huge bookstore success across the Atlantic, the literary series for young adults Children of Blood and Bone will go on the big screen! As soon as the first volume, entitled Of blood and rage in France, in 2018, the world created by the American of Nigerian origin Tomi Adeyemi, regularly dubbed the new JK Rowling, interested Hollywood.
In 2019, it was thus announced that Rick Famuyiwa would direct the adaptation for Fox 2000. But the takeover of 21st Century Fox by Disney caused the project to change hands, which landed at Lucasfilm. It was then to be the studio’s first original live-action film since it was acquired by Mickey’s house in 2012.
Lucasfilm, however, let the rights to the series expire, leaving Tomi Adeyemi free to find a new studio for the adaptation of his bestseller. According to Deadline, a bidding war then took place between Universal, Amazon, Netflix and Paramount. All wanting to get the rights to these novels in the vein of Harry Potter. They have thus been the most coveted books since the arrival on the market of the rights of Hunger Games.
And it was finally Paramount that beat the streaming platforms to the post, with a more attractive offer than the others, including the guarantee for the author to have a say in creative decisions, as well as to be in writing the screenplay, all for a seven-figure salary. But also, of course, a guaranteed cinema release!
Welcome to the land of Orisha
It is therefore exclusively on the big screen that spectators from all over the world will be able to discover the African universe in which evolves Zélie, the heroine of Of blood and rage and its sequel Of shadow and revenge. However, it is still too early to know who will play the character since the project is only in its infancy.
No filming or release date has been announced, but if you want to know more about the plot of this fantastic saga, here is the summary of the first episode: “There was a time when the land of Orisha was bathed in magic. But one night, everything changed, the king made him disappear and enslaved the people of the majis. Zélie Adebola was only a child then.
Today, she has the means to bring back the magic and restore freedom to her people; even if in front of her stands the prince heir to the throne, ready to do anything to hunt her down. In an imaginary Africa where white leopards roam and where spirits thirst for revenge, Zélie sets off on a perilous quest…“
We wish Children of Blood and Bone success at the box office like these different sagas:
