With Fairtrade chocolate, you can enjoy a sweet that not only tastes wonderful, but also supports the people who grow the cocoa.
We all know how important environmental protection, occupational safety and good living conditions are. But all too often it turns out that this is not the case when it comes to the production of food abroad. Being aware that the chocolate is Fairtrade and the local situation can raise awareness of how we consume. So that the chocolate can be eaten with a clear conscience, it is worth taking a closer look at the brands.
Why buy fair trade?
Fairtrade foods are goods that come from fair trade and where economic, social and ecological standards are taken into account during production. This includes environmental protection and the promotion of better working and living conditions in the manufacturing countries. The special Fairtrade seal enables more stable prices and long-term trading relationships to be maintained, so that the farmers have security and can work under appropriate conditions.
This is how you recognize Fairtrade chocolate
Fairtrade chocolate must have a seal stating that the chocolate has been produced under good conditions or it comes directly from companies that are Fairtrade certified:
- Fairtrade seal: These indicate that the entire product was manufactured under fair conditions.
- Fairtrade seal for mixed products: There are also mixed products, which often include chocolate. For these products, all ingredients available under Fairtrade conditions must be Fairtrade certified. These products are usually marked with an additional arrow that refers to the back and thus to further information.
- Certain brandswho rely entirely on fair trade: If you buy products from brands such as GEPA, Banafair, El Puente or Weltpartner, you can be sure that these goods are fairly traded.
It depends on the right chocolate
If you want to start with your chocolate, we will show you a few delicious varieties that come from safe trade and thus brands that make sure that the people in the producing countries are doing well and that the environment is also protected. Because the price of chocolate is kept low by large companies, which is carried out on the backs of the farmers. This also encourages child labor. We present five chocolates that rely on fair conditions and taste good.
Tony’s Chocolonely
The dark milk chocolate with pretzel toffee from Tony’s Chocolonely is a heavenly blend. Here, delicious pretzel pieces are combined with toffee crunch and rounded off with dark milk chocolate. The chocolate tastes even better because Tony’s Chocolonely is trying to make the world a better place with the candy. The company is committed to making the cocoa trade fair and 100 percent free of modern slavery and child labor. The situation is particularly bad in Ghana and the Ivory Coast. GEPA Organic Grand Chocolat
The Dark chocolate with pyramid salt from GEPA turns a tart treat into a salty temptation. This chocolate not only tastes exceptional and particularly good, but also comes from fair trade. The cocoa is produced by smallholders from the CECAQ-11 cooperative in São Tomé, a GEPA cocoa trading partner. This means that GEPA chocolate can be enjoyed twice over. The chocolate packaging is also sustainable and consists of Naturflex film, which consists of 94 percent renewable raw materials and is biodegradable and compostable.
Zotter chocolate
The variety ensures special enjoyment Mountain milk chocolate with butter caramel cream from Zotter. The caramel is mixed with butter, making it particularly creamy. The chocolate is combined with a layer of nougat and caramel crispies that make the combination perfect. The entire company is Fairtrade verified and a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), which works to ensure that the ten principles of fair trade are observed. This includes environmental protection, transparency, fair pay and the end of child labor.
Nucao
The Chocolate bar Crisp & Crunch from nucao, is a melt-in-the-mouth chocolate that gets a crunchy note thanks to the cornflakes. Nucao focuses on positive consumption and focuses on climate friendliness, plastic-free, sugar reduction, naturalness and fair trade. With every chocolate sold, a tree is planted with project partner Eden to get closer to the goal of planting one billion trees by 2030. In this way, our living space should be secured in the long term. The chocolate is 100 percent organic and vegan.
