Fake resume and embezzlement: Republican George Santos indicted

Fake CV and embezzlement
Charges brought against Republican George Santos

George Santos is now in real trouble. As reported by US media, the public prosecutor’s office is bringing charges against the US politician. He is said to have given false information in his CV and embezzled donations.

According to media reports, US prosecutors have filed charges against Congressman George Santos after scandals about fabricated details in the résumé and questionable handling of donations during the election campaign. The 34-year-old Republican is scheduled to appear in court in the Eastern District of New York today, Wednesday the broadcaster CNN and other US media reported on Tuesday (local time), citing multiple sources involved in the process. Neither the judiciary nor Santos commented on the reports.

Santos has been a member of the US House of Representatives for the New York City borough, which includes the boroughs of Queens and Long Island, since November. Since then, allegations of fraud and deception have overshadowed his tenure, as the Republican is said to have invented much of the resume with which he presented himself to voters in 2022. In March it was also announced that the FBI was investigating him for the alleged misappropriation of donations. It was not initially known on which of the various investigations the accusation was based.

Despite repeated calls for his resignation from Democrats and individual Republicans, Santos announced in mid-April that he wanted to run again in the congressional elections in November 2024. Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told CNN he would look at the charges before considering whether Santos should be removed from Congress. At the end of January, Santos only announced that he wanted to give up his two committee posts for the time being. The Republican had informed his party colleagues at a non-public group meeting, US media reported at the time, citing participants.
