Falling applications for hospital practitioner positions

3,364 applications received, compared to 4,056, during the same period, in 2022. The National Management Center (CNG), responsible for the careers of hospital practitioners (PH), published at the end of June an initial report on the spring recruitment round. The result of this half-yearly session is down, with a drop of almost 20% in applications for the 10,846 vacancies published by hospitals, roughly the same volume as last year. Figures that do not fail to worry in the hospital community. Several unions of practitioners called for a strike on July 3 and 4 to ask the Ministry of Health in particular for the urgent resumption of negotiations on the attractiveness of the profession.

The situation has been worsening for more than a decade, notes the union, which compiles data from the CNG: the number of vacant positions was thus 22.6% in 2011. In a diagram produced by the union for the years 2008 to 2022, we can see more or less severe changes taking shape depending on the discipline: from approximately 80% in 2008, the share of occupied posts fell to 68% in surgery and medicine in nearly fifteen years, when it fell to 59% in anesthesia-resuscitation.

“Evolution of the relationship to work”

At the same time, the number of practitioners has continued to increase: on the 1er January 2023, according to the latest figures posted online in early July by the CNG – which no longer publishes vacancy rates and does not wish to communicate on the issue –, the number of PHs working in establishments is 46,811. over the past ten years, a workforce up 10.8%.

A development that is not contradictory with that of rising vacancies in hospitals, continues Anne Geffroy-Wernet: “The demand for care has continued to grow. And there has also been a change in the relationship to work, with a reduction in working hours. “I was working eighty hours a week when I started, doctors don’t do that anymore, and that’s fine”she adds.

There is also an emergency, according to the figures which are about to publish the Hospital Federation of France, lobby of the public hospital. According to a survey covering the year 2022, to which nearly 25% of the thousand health establishments responded (including half of the University Hospitals), 98% of hospital directors say they have difficulty recruiting practitioners. These focus on gynecology, emergencies, anesthesia, or pediatrics and radiology.
