In Fallout 4, you will encounter many factions, including 4 major ones! In this article, we help you better understand the advantages and disadvantages of each of them so that you can make the best choices in your game. Warning, this article contains some spoilers.

Summary of all our guides on Fallout 4

Summary

  • Commonwealth Militiamen
  • The Institute
  • The Brotherhood of Steel
  • The rail network

Commonwealth Militiamen

Let’s start our overview with the Commonwealth Militia faction of Fallout 4. It’s a preferred choice by quite a few players and we quickly understand why. Indeed, one of the advantages of this faction, is that you will be able to continue the quests of the Brotherhood of Steel and the Rail Network in parallel.

In addition, the rather neutral alignment of this faction allows you to join it quite easily, whatever your desire on your own alignment! Moreover, joining them gives you access to some cool options like artillery airstrikes.

However, some players will not appreciate the quest line linked to this faction. Indeed, we are not going to hide from you that it is not necessarily the most thrilling of the four. However, if you want to get started with this faction, you will have to do the quest “Freedom’s Call” found at the Concord Liberty Museum.

The Institute

The second faction that you will be able to join in Fallout 4 is the Institute. The latter has focused on technology and science for years and these include the latter who are at the origin of Synthetics which can be found in the Wastelands.

These will also be part of the bonuses that you can get from a good relationship with the Institute. On top of that, you will have access to free healing, as well as weapons that are quite powerful. You might then think that this is the perfect faction!

However, apart from the moral choice that joining them is quite important, once it is done, quite a few things will be inaccessible to you. You will not be able to access merchants from other factions. Additionally, you will have to destroy the Rail Network and the Brotherhood of Steel! If you’re still willing to join them, head to the Institute at the end of the main story to start the “Return Home” quest.

The Brotherhood of Steel

Present since the early hours of the Fallout license, the Brotherhood of Steel is one of the main factions of this fourth opus. This order campaigns for the recovery and the preservation of technologies dating back to a period before the Great War.

By joining, you will be able to get your hands on armor and weapons that are impressively effective. In addition, we won’t spoil it for you, but the end of the game by joining the Brotherhood of Steel makes clearly one of those that players prefer.

Be careful though because as with any faction, there will still be some problems on the horizon. The main thing is that you will once again have to destroy two factions, the Institute and the Rail Network to achieve your goals. However, if you want to join the Brotherhood, head towards the Corvega Power Plant to start the “Supporting Fire” quest.

The rail network

The last faction that will interest us here is the Rail Network and as you have seen throughout this article, they have not only made friends in the Wasteland. It must be said that the latter decided to take the side of the Synthetics, not very appreciated in the world of Fallout. Their idea is to free them from their creators, the Institute.

From then on, as you can imagine, one of the disadvantages is that you will have to destroy them, as well as the Brotherhood of Steel, who are reluctant to let the Synthetics live. Moreover, the bonuses aren’t that crazy unless you play a stealth-based build.

Conversely, if this is your case, you will largely find what you are looking for. Same thing if you are of good alignment, the Rail Network quest is the one that will best correspond to your alignment. Finally, be aware that merchants will offer you effective armor at unbeatable prices. To join them, you will have to take an interest in the quest “The Path to Freedom”.
