Family caregiver: the conditions for obtaining the status: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

By family carer, we mean any person who provides non-professional and regular help to a dependent person with a loss of autonomy. But coming to the aid of a person in your family circle in this way can give rights if you take the steps to legally obtain the status of family caregiver.

Becoming a family caregiver: what does the law say?

We are considered as a caregiver if we help an elderly person with a loss of autonomy for acts of daily life on a regular and frequent basis (person in their family or person with whom they are in a civil partnership, among others ). This aid may give the right to a daily allowance, the daily allowance of the caregiver (Ajpa), paid by the Family allowance fund (Caf), and which is established in 2023 at 62.44 euros net per day.

How to apply for Ajpa?

People who have a Caf account can make a request online, under “Request a service”. Otherwise, you must download an online form and send it to the Caf (or the MSA) which is responsible for examining the file. If the aid is granted, the Caf (or the MSA fund) sends a certificate each month to be completed by the employer (when you are an employee or civil servant and on caregiver leave) or by yourself if you are a non-working – employed or unemployed.

What are the conditions for benefiting from Ajpa?

To benefit from the Ajpa, you must:

  • reside in France;
  • have requested caregiver leave (CPA) from their employer or cease or reduce their self-employed professional activity;
  • being close to the person being cared for (close and stable ties);
  • provide non-professional assistance to perform all or part of the acts of daily living;
  • intervene regularly with the person being cared for, who must have a degree of incapacity of at least 80%.
