“Family” leave introduced in 2025: what we know about this new right for young parents: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

After the extension of paternity leave from 14 to 28 days on July 1, 2021, it is parental leave that will experience a significant upheaval. Wednesday November 8, 2023, in the columns of The ExpressAurore Bergé announced that‘A “new right for families” would see the light of day in 2025 : “family” leave. “Today we have a leave that exists, which is two years and which can go up to three years if it is shared between the two parents, compensated at a maximum of 430 euros per month. The idea is is to create an additional right, a new right”explained the Minister of Solidarity and Families, referring to the current parental leave. Once maternity or paternity leave has been taken, parents will have the opportunity to extend their time spent with their newborn by benefiting from “family” leave. “They will be able to take it at the same time or one after the other, full-time or part-time, for a birth or an adoption”added the minister.

“It will be their freedom, their right, their choice. It’s a real revolution!”

What will differentiate parental leave as we currently know from “family” leave is remuneration. This new right reserved for families will be well remunerated for “guarantee the middle classes to have access to it”. According to Aurore Bergé, parents who earn between 2,000 and 3,000 euros cannot, today, take advantage of parental leave, and thus see their income drop to 430 euros. “With our reform, parents will finally have the material and financial conditions to be able to stop and take care of their baby in his first months, if they wish. This will be their freedom, their right, their choice. is a real revolution!”welcomed the one who put on the table her desire to transform parental leave upon his arrival in government in July 2023. August 24, 2023 on franceinfo, the former head of the Macronist deputies had declared that she wanted the salary for parental leave to no longer be fixed by a fixed scale, but for it to be proportional to income. The “family” leave defended by Aurore Bergé will not replace parental leave. According to the minister, the latter could still exist. Parents will therefore be able, if they wish, to continue to benefit from it as well, in 2025. For the moment, the duration of family leave has not yet been specified, but it should be shorter than parental leave.
