Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto died at the age of 83 on Monday June 5, her family announced on social media. The information was confirmed on the official instagram account of the singer, Tuesday.

The artist, born as Astrud Evangelina Weinert in northern Brazil in 1940, “was the pioneer and the best”, wrote Sofia Gilberto, her granddaughter, on Instagram. “At 22, she gave her voice to the English version of “Girl from Ipanema” and gained international fame. »

The famous song was recorded in 1963 alongside American saxophonist Stan Getz, and the “father of bossa nova”, João Gilberto, her husband at the time. The famous song is considered one of the classics of this genre, born in the late 1950s in Brazil. Thanks to this song, the artist won the Grammy for song of the year in 1965, becoming the first woman to receive this award.
