In just under a month and a half, the big EM break will take place. On June 11, Turkey and Italy will meet in Rome for the opening game. The question that concerns football Europe is whether there will be fans there.
Uefa’s tenor has been clear so far: “An EM with spectators is currently our lead scenario, which should give us security in planning,” said tournament boss Martin Kallen (56) SRF.
As many spectators as possible should be in the stadium at the first pan-European EM. In the current Corona situation, however, this requires flexibility from all parties. This is also clear to Kallen: “If the situation finally does not allow it, the game will not be played in front of fans.”
Bilbao and Dublin kicked out
Surprising sounds from Uefa after Bilbao and Dublin were recently kicked out of the venues because they cannot guarantee that fans will be allowed into the stadium. But also President Aleksander Ceferin recently spoke about the possibility of playing in front of empty seats.
The Dublin Games have taken over St. Petersburg and London. Seville has moved up in place of Bilbao. According to Kallen, short-term planning is now in full swing in Andalusia. The Estadio La Cartuja has to be rebuilt in the next few weeks and 800 volunteers have to be hired, according to the Bernese Oberland. (smi)
