The Muggle (or No-Maj) Jacob Kowalski also plays an important role in the 3rd part of the “Beasts” series “Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets”. As part of his plan to defeat the black magician Gellert Grindelwald, Albus Dumbledore even takes the lovable character to Hogwarts, ultimately giving him a wand.
The wand thing was already seen in trailers for “Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets” – and led to wild speculation among “Harry Potter” fans. Would Jacob turn out to be gifted with magic after all?
“Fantastic Beasts 3” then provides the ultimately relatively simple explanation: Jacob’s wand has no magical core, so it is not able to produce magic, and ultimately only serves as a distraction – which is completely sufficient for Dumbledore’s purposes.
“Fantastic Beasts 3”: Jacob Kowalski has a secret Slytherin connection
At the same time, in the 3rd part of the “Beasts” series, it is also revealed that Jacob’s “fake wand” is made of snake wood. This material is not often found in Harry Potter canon. One of the most famous snakewood staff owners was Salazar Slytherin, one of the founders of Hogwarts and Slytherin House.
Salazar’s wand was special, and could only be activated by a Parselmouth. In a roundabout way, the staff ended up in the possession of Isolt Sayre, one of the founders of Ilvermorny, the US equivalent of Hogwarts.
However, according to the Wizarding World website, Salazar’s wand could no longer be activated at this point. So it was planted in Ilvermorny – and a snakewood tree grew out of it. This has healing properties – and thus in a certain way draws the arc to Jacob Kowalski and his role within the Wizarding World.
With that in mind, Albus Dumbledore’s choice of wand material makes a lot of sense. And last but not least, the character Lally Hicks from “Fantastic Beasts 3” also teaches in Ilvermorny, which is why it also seems possible that Jacob’s staff actually comes from the healing tree that lives there.
