“Fantastic”, “beautiful”, “poignant” … this Netflix film has everyone in agreement

With “Pinocchio”, Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro directs his first animated film. This rereading of the famous tale available on Netflix enchants viewers.

To end the cinema year in style, the Netflix platform offers the adaptation in stop-motion of Pinocchio through the eyes of Guillermo del Toro. For 15 years, the Mexican filmmaker has been trying to realize this crazy project.

It offers a dark vision of Carlo Collodi’s tale, which this time takes place in the fascist Italy of Mussolini, and stunning animation.

It took 940 days to film this Pinocchio. That’s ten times more than shooting a classic feature film. The result is up to expectations.

To give voice to his story, Guillermo del Toro surrounds himself with one of the most prestigious cast, made up, among others, of Ewan McGregor – in Jiminy Cricket -, Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett, Christoph Waltz, Ron Perlman, David Bradley or even Finn Wolfhard.

On social networks, opinions are almost unanimous:

Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro is a masterpiece and by far the best film of 2022 – and one of the best stop motion movies I’ve seen. Looks like the best was saved for last.”

I wanted to digest it, but for me it’s a masterpiece. Absolutely sublime and transcendent in every possible way. The movie broke me when I saw it so I want to give it some time. Guillermo del Toro’s love for the story of Pinocchio can be felt in every shot, it’s perfect.

Pinocchio is available on Netflix.
