The Ramos era at Real Madrid ends

Now it’s over: Sergio Ramos has played for Real Madrid for 16 years. He becomes a club icon – but the club does not want to keep him at any cost. The 35-year-old does not agree to the new contract offer. So now follows the farewell.

Spain’s national soccer player and club icon Sergio Ramos is leaving Real Madrid after 16 years. The 35-year-old head of defense, who was not nominated by national coach Luis Enrique for the current European Championship, could not agree with Los Blancos on an extension of his contract, which expired on June 30th. Real announced that Ramos will be bid farewell tomorrow, Thursday at 12.30 p.m., at a digital press conference in the presence of club president Florentino Pérez.

According to media reports, Real is said to have offered the defense chief a one-year contract with ten percent less salary. Ramos reportedly wanted a new contract for at least two years.

22 common titles

Ramos has recently suffered from injuries and was no longer one of the first choices at Real Madrid. With his tendon rupture at the beginning of May, Ramos had an increasingly difficult position in Madrid. For the defensive strategist, the injury continued a series of blacks in the current season. Because Ramos had only recently made his comeback in the Real jersey after a forced break of several weeks due to a calf injury and intermittent corona infection.

Since the second half of January, the defensive sword had failed due to a meniscus tear and a subsequent operation until the beginning of March. Ramos had to take his first compulsory break of several weeks in the current season in the autumn because of a torn hamstring. In total, the veteran only completed 15 point and five Champions League games in the end of the season.

180 international matches, world and European champions

For the Spanish national team, with which Ramos became European champions in 2008 and 2012 and world champions in 2010, he played 180 international matches. He could have caught up with the international record (184) of the Egyptian Ahmed Hassan at the EM. The tough defender won a total of 22 titles with Real, including four times the Champions League, five Spanish championships and four times the FIFA Club World Cup.

Real Madrid finished second in the Spanish league last season and had to admit defeat to city rivals Atlético. In the Champions League, the end came in the semifinals against the eventual winners Chelsea FC. At the end of the season, coach Zinedine Zidane resigned.

Carlo Ancelotti is returning to the club as his successor for the new season. He then has David Alaba as a defender on his team. The Austrian left FC Bayern after a total of 13 years and had not renewed his contract. He is considered the designated successor to Ramos.
