Would you like to know how to turn a boring look into an interesting one? Then we have this great hack for you. With the 3-part rule, you’ll never look dull again.

You probably know that: Your closet is full to the brim and yet you just don’t know what to wear. All clothes seem kind of boring. This may be because you may be combining them incorrectly. Influencers and fashionistas have long figured out how to put together pieces of clothing to create an exciting look. The secret formula is: Always combine three pieces of clothing. And the great thing is that you already have everything you need in your closet.

3-part rule: how does it work?

The three pieces of clothing usually mean two pieces of clothing for the upper body, e.g. shirt and jacket, and one piece for the lower body, ie pants or skirt. Only by combining three parts does a look become really complete. Because maybe you’ve already noticed that only pants and a shirt don’t offer a particularly interesting sight. A shirt can complete the whole style and make it really round.

Depending on the occasion and the season, the following items of clothing are suitable for styling the top:

  • t shirt
  • crop top
  • Blouse
  • Top
  • shirt
  • Jacket (jeans, leather or other)
  • blazer
  • blouson

Below you can combine:

  • pants (short or long)
  • Skirt (mini, midi or maxi)
  • leggings

The only exception to this 3-piece rule are of course dresses and jumpsuits, as these already combine a top and bottom.

Adapt the 3-part rule to the season

Sure, when it’s particularly hot, you probably don’t want to throw a jacket over your shirt as well. Vests, for example, are a very good alternative here. They are made of all kinds of materials and can complement an outfit and turn it into something special.

In winter you can reach for long-sleeved pieces and thicker fabrics. A great combination of hoodie and blazer, for example, is also an option. This results in a successful combination of cozy and chic.

What is the best way to combine?

Now, of course, you shouldn’t twirl all your clothes wildly. Style, color and cuts should match or complement each other in an interesting way.

style

Sometimes it’s boring to stick to just one style. It gets exciting when you combine two styles in one look. Like the classic: Romantic and rocking. The combination of a patterned, light blouse and a rocking leather jacket is suitable for this. A combination of sweatpants or leggings (so sporty underneath) and a blouse and blazer (finely conservative on top) can also look great.

colour

Here you can do color blocking and combine complementary colors in a very specific way, or you can choose a tone-on-tone look. You combine the parts in one color, only in different light and dark tones.

cuts

You need a bit of finesse here. Especially when it comes to the width and length of clothing, you should take a close look to see whether the parts harmonize with each other. The short, tight jacket certainly goes better with wide, baggy pants than the oversize blazer. Otherwise you sink into your outfit.

Also, the individual parts of an outfit should not necessarily all be tight. Especially the change from wide, narrow, short and long gives an interesting overall impression.
