Tube tops are back

Hardly any top trend lasted as long as tube tops in the 90s and 2000s. The strapless pieces were favorites of Paris Hilton, Sarah Jessica Parker and Co. Now they are celebrating their comeback – albeit with a decisive difference.
Whether low-waist jeans, popcorn shirts, tight drainpipe dresses or neon colors – this summer you could almost think you’ve taken a journey back in time to the 90s or early 2000s. Trends that were forgotten for more than two decades are now experiencing great hype again. And of course a fashion trend should not be missing: the tube tops.
Hardly any other top was able to stay in our wardrobes as persistently as the strapless, tight-fitting stretch top. “Sex and the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker in particular was a fan of the trend top both in her role as Carrie Bradshaw and in her private life. This is not surprising: the tops were worn skin-tight at the time. They thus formed the coveted hourglass silhouette of the wearer. They were therefore the ideal choice for feminine, sexy looks in particular.

Tube tops are celebrating a revival, but in a different way than expected
Whether it’s the Scandinavian girls or the model Emily Ratajkowski – it almost seems as if tube tops are a must this summer. The strapless it-pieces can be seen everywhere again at the moment. But they come across a little differently than before. While tube tops were styled to be as sexy as possible in the 90s and 2000s, in the summer of 2022 they will be combined in a casual and androgynous way. At the Balenciaga show in Paris, for example, Emily Ratajkowski wears a black tube top with wide baggy pants in a workwear style, creating an edgy, genderless street style.

The 2022 summer trend doesn’t need much: wide pants, cool sneakers and a baseball cap and the hybrid summer look combines retro elements with cool new accessories.
Tube tops yes, but please made of this material
Another difference from before is the material that tube tops are made of this summer. In the early 2000s, jersey and satin fabrics were still in the lead, but in 2022 it will be strapless tops made of knitwear that will be celebrated everywhere again. Scandinavian women are already showing how the trend is worn. Pernille Teisbaek wears pink tracking pants and white platform slides with the white tube top, and Anouk Yve prefers the combination of wide suit pants, knitted top, boyfriend shirt and baseball cap.
Tube Tops 2022: The combination is half the battle
One or the other may be skeptical about the tube top trend, because the tops have one major disadvantage: bra straps cannot be hidden underneath. Strapless bras are one option that offers support, but those with smaller breasts who need less support can opt for tape or just wear nothing under the tops.
Tube tops are really versatile in 2022 and can also be easily combined with other styles.

However, if you enjoy experimenting with fashion, you can also combine two different tops, as fashionista Tamara Kalinic does, for example. She is wearing a white blouse under the loose-fitting knitted tube top – a style combination that can also be used to hide a brassiere. As you can see, the 2022 summer trend is incredibly versatile and can be worn by almost everyone. You only have to know how.
