Fashion Week in Paris: Balencia show is remembered

Avalon/Keystone

Balenciaga’s chief designer Demna Gvasalia shows with his dark fashion show that fashion can be political.

The invited guests had to leave the city for the Balenciaga fashion show. Outside Paris, in a warehouse full of mud and musty smells, chief designer Demna invited Gvasalia into a gloomy world strongly reminiscent of war, flight or natural disasters.

In a note on the show, Gvasalia expresses his desire to be different. Classifying fashion as glossy, exclusive and expensive is old-fashioned and limited, writes Gvasalia.

The models then carried the different parts of the new collection down the catwalk and through the mud without any worries. The whole show was characterized by a certain nonchalance and broke with the flawless aesthetics of the Parisian fashion world.

But the fact remains that the models wore outfits worth thousands of francs down the post-apocalyptic runway. Jacqueline Krause-Blouin, editor-in-chief of the Swiss magazine “Annabelle”, says: “The question is whether something capitalist can be critical of capitalism. Gvasalia shows us how blind we consumers are and lets us question what is actually allowed to have value.»
