Spain’s new soccer heroine Olga Carmona was hit by a private stroke of fate on the day of the World Cup triumph in Australia. The father of the captain and final goalscorer died on Sunday, the Spanish football association RFEF said in the evening in “deep sorrow”.

According to the association’s statement, Carmona only found out about it later. “The player received the sad news after the World Cup final,” wrote the RFEF: “We send our sincere condolences to Olga and her family at a moment of deepest pain. We love you Olga, you are part of the history of Spanish football. ” Their club, Real Madrid, also expressed their condolences. “Real Madrid would like to express our condolences and heartfelt sympathy to Olga, her family and all her loved ones,” Real Madrid wrote on their website.
Spain had defeated European champions England 1-0 (1-0) in the final and thus won the title for the first time. The 23-year-old Carmona (29th) decided the game with a left-footed shot into the far corner. After her goal, she showed a message on the shirt under her jersey. It said: “Merchi”, with a heart as the dot on the i.
At first, the message on social media was puzzled. “Marca” reported that it would be an old-school salute. On the other hand, a journalist reported for “The Athletic”that it was a message for the mother of a friend who passed away a few days ago.
After the game, Carmona solved the mystery himself. “First of all, I want to say that this win, this achievement, is dedicated to the mother of one of my best friends who passed recently,” she said. “I celebrated the goal with her jersey and from here I dedicate it to the whole family with all my love.”
