Fear the Walking Dead: how does the zombie series end?

How did the horror series “Fear the Walking Dead”, the first spin-off of “The Walking Dead” franchise to see the light of day, end?

After eight years of good and loyal service, Fear the Walking Dead bowed out this Sunday, November 19 with the broadcast of its final episode. A year after the end of the original series, fans of the franchise were able to discover the outcome of this spin-off – the first to see the light of day.

While the end of The Walking Dead did not really make an impression, Fear the Walking Dead did not arouse more enthusiasm. Once appreciated by part of the public, to the point of having been considered better than the parent series, the last seasons of the spin-off were nevertheless broadcast to almost general indifference, and this final episode did not exception.

If there is one observation that we can make at first glance, it is that the ending of Fear the Walking Dead is like that of The Walking Dead: flat and anecdotal. Ending with a separation of the group of survivors, the path undertaken by the heroes of the program nevertheless leaves the door open to possible new spin-offs.

A mother’s pain

Played by Kim Dickens, Madison was present from the first episode of the series. Among the rare survivors who appear in the finale, it should nevertheless be remembered that the latter was absent for three seasons (her return took place during season 7) after her presumed death. The roles are now reversed, since it is now the disappearance of her daughter Alicia that the heroine is now confronted with.

Blinded by the hope of finding her daughter alive, Madison embarked on a vengeful and merciless quest. Even if it means taking Tracy hostage, Troy’s daughter whom she savagely killed, after the latter revealed to her that the little girl is Alicia’s child, and therefore her granddaughter.

Perfectly trained in the principles of survival, Tracy manages to grab Madison’s gun and shoot her at point blank range. The bullet will be stopped by a medal that belonged to Alicia; This moment makes Madison realize the evil she was about to commit, which explains why she tries to sacrifice her own life to save that of her comrades in arms.

Definitely badass, Madison does not succumb to the explosion she caused. Saved at the last minute from the rubble by Tracy, she is joined by Alicia – the occasion for a moving reunion between mother and daughter. This sequence also allows us to learn that Tracy is not Alicia’s daughter, but that doesn’t matter since now the three characters are united by an unbreakable bond.

“Our series begins with Madison, the matriarch of a blended family in Los Angeles. So our ideal ending is this: Madison at the head of a new blended family, now made up of her daughter Alicia and her granddaughter. daughter by proxy, Tracy” commented for Entertainment Weekly series co-showrunner Andrew Chambliss.

Return to the Sanctuary

This final episode is strongly marked by the absence of Morgan. Having left during the final season to join Rick Grimes in Alexandria, the character played by Lennie James did not ultimately reappear in any of The Walking Dead series. Perhaps his return is planned for the mini-series The Ones Who Live, the launch date of which has just been revealed?

Also among the most emblematic characters of the franchise, Dwight survives this final episode. After a long battle, during which he almost lost his weapon to the left, here he is ready to begin a new path by returning to the fortress of the Sanctuary, the old landmark of Negan.

Here again, it would seem surprising that such a character would be offered such an unexciting ending. Who knows if Dwight will not reappear in season 2 of Dead City, the spin-off centered on Maggie and Negan which sees the latter face the Croatian, one of his former lieutenants? All fans will agree that as it stands, Dwight in any case deserved a better ending than the one currently proposed.

Victor, or the path of the hero

Finally, how can we not mention Victor, a character also present since the first season of Fear the Walking Dead. While his interpreter Colman Domingo does not close the door to a return in a spin-off (provided that the role “challenge”via Deadline), the end of the series leaves him becoming the main hero following Madison’s disappearance.

The series also offers a happy ending for Daniel Salazar. Certainly, the finale does not bring his wife and daughter back to life – but the episode nevertheless ends on an optimistic note via the reunion with his cat Skidmark. It must be noted that The Walking Dead franchise has very rarely accustomed us to such moments of sweetness…

The future of the license has already been announced. The series Dead City and Daryl Dixon (currently broadcast on Paramount+) have been renewed for a season 2, and the mini-series The Ones Who Live with Rick Grimes and Michonne will be broadcast on February 25 on AMC. While waiting for other derivative productions to emerge…
