Federal Council elections 2023 – Only Andrey wants to be in the Federal Council for the Greens – News

  • Freiburg National Councilor Gerhard Andrey remains the only Green Party candidate for the Federal Council elections.
  • The last person to confirm to SRF was Zug National Councilor Manuela Weichelt that she did not want to run for the party.
  • With Andrey, the Greens want to attack one of the two FDP seats in the state government in December – despite the recent decline in the share of voters to 9.8 percent.

Andrey from Freiburg justified his candidacy last Sunday by saying that a quarter of the population is not represented in the state government today. All those who think climate protection, progressive entrepreneurship and digitalization are important are missing there. The younger generation is also not present in the state government, said Andrey. A seat for the Greens in the state government would therefore be much better justified than the second seat for the FDP.

«It looks difficult, but it is a renewal election and I am making myself available. Ultimately, it is up to the other parties to integrate the most important forces into the government,” Andrey told SRF about his candidacy.

The party will decide on the official ticket with Andrey at the next parliamentary group meeting on November 10th, General Secretary Rahel Estermann told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Friday. Until then, there will be an examination process under the leadership of Councilor of States Adèle Thorens (VD), according to a press release. After the nomination, the internal party appearances would take place, said Estermann.

Numerous prominent Green politicians had previously withdrawn from the race, including Green Party President Balthasar Glättli (ZH), Geneva Councilor Lisa Mazzone, Ticino National Councilor Greta Gysin, Aargau National Councilor Irène Kälin, Glarus Councilor Mathias Zopfi, the former Berne government councilor Berhard Pulver, Berne government councilor Christine Häsler, Zurich National Councilor Bastien Girod and, most recently, Zug National Councilor Manuela Weichelt.
