Federal government is planning a new attempt: Autobahn App 2.0 brings new functions

The federal motorway company wants to make the criticized motorway app more user-friendly and retrofit it with new functions. Truck drivers in particular should be pleased.

The aim is that Federal Autobahn app A spokesman for Autobahn GmbH announced that the German press agency would like to make it “even more user-friendly and service-oriented”. With App 2.0, new features should take into account many previous reactions from users.

Functions are planned that will significantly improve the service for users. One example is “dynamic information” for truck drivers. Free parking spaces in truck parking spaces are to be displayed nationwide.

The Autobahn app has been installed more than 420,000 times so far, it said. This is a “clearly positive response”. The principle of “evolution instead of revolution” applies to the further development of the app. The app should be expanded step by step, precisely and cost-effectively, with additional functions.

The app started three months ago. The aim of the motorway company is that motorists should get more and better information about the traffic situation, for example about diversions and about when construction sites or accident sites will be closed again. The app also shows where and what type of charging stations are available for electric cars. Independent route guidance is not possible, but route planning with subsequent navigation by a pre-installed provider – Google Maps or Apple Maps.

This is exactly what users complain about in reviews in the Apple App Store, which is why the app is superfluous. The Autobahn app received a comparatively poor user rating in the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.

The federal government had spent around 1.2 million euros on the development of the motorway app, as the Federal Ministry of Transport announced in its answer to a parliamentary question. The Green transport politician Stefan Gelbhaar had criticized: “More than a million euros for an app without any added value – that is a farce and thus a case for the audit office.”
