It is a painful loss that the King of Spain Felipe VI has had to face in recent days. On the night of March 1 to 2, Fernando Gómez-Acebo, the sovereign’s first cousin, died at just 49 years old. Suffering for several years from lung problems, the latter finally gave in to the illness and now rests alongside his loved ones, his parents Luis Gómez-Acebo and Infanta Pilar, at the San Isidro cemetery in Madrid. During the funeral held on March 2, several prominent members of the Spanish royal family traveled to pay their last respects to Fernando Gómez-Acebo and say goodbye to him one last time.
Among those present were of course King Felipe VI, as well as his wife, Queen Letizia, but also Queen Sophie, mother of the sovereign, as well as Felipe VI’s sister, Infanta Elena. However, during the burial, organized the day after the funeral, the king traveled alone to the cemetery crematorium. Very affected by this disappearance, the monarch was very close to his cousin, according to the country’s tabloids, relayed by our colleagues from Point of view, this Monday, March 4. The two men would have indeed spent many holidays together in Palma de Mallorca during their youth.

Felipe VI continues solemn events
Recent times have been particularly difficult for the King of Spain. In addition to the death of his cousin, the monarch also traveled a few days earlier to Windsor, England, to attend the British royal family’s tribute to King Constantine II of Greece, who died a year earlier. An imposing and solemn moment but which also allowed the Hispanic monarch to share a few moving moments with his father. The two men, who were thought to be angry, were very close to each other during this ceremony and even shared gestures of affection. Images which did not fail to move all fans of the Iberian Crown.
