Nancy Johnson
We all like to treat ourselves to a delicious ice cream on hot days, but that would hardly have been possible without a certain woman. Because today’s ice cream machines, which spoil us with different flavors, are thanks to Nancy Johnson. In 1843, the then Philadelphia housewife received a patent for her invention that changed the ice cream market forever. Previously, ice cream was considered a luxury that only the wealthy could afford because it was time-consuming and expensive to produce. Back then, the ice cream was stirred by hand for hours in ice-cold containers and the price for a scoop was therefore set high. Nancy Johnson recognized the problem and automated the method by attaching a crank with an agitator to the outside of her machine to make the ice cream easier to produce. This shortened the previous process by a large amount.
