FERMENTALG: Fermentalg, a player committed to the food needs of tomorrow with the support of Bpifrance – 2022-12-06 at 18:00

Libourne – December 6, 2022

– Fermentalg (Euronext – FALG), French expert in microalgae, is accelerating the development of its 2

th

product platform, dedicated to a natural and bioactive blue dye (BLUE ORIGINS®) and to alternative proteins (KALVEA™), with the support of Bpifrance within the framework of the call for projects

“Food needs of tomorrow”

for a

“Sustainable and healthy food”

.

Beyond the partnership with DDW, a subsidiary of the Givaudan Group, with a view to marketing a natural blue food coloring (now already in the industrial production phase – link to cp 1ere co), Fermentalg continues to deploy its platform

Galdieria

for wider valorization in the food and nutraceutical fields.

Already at the origin of a natural alternative to chemical dyes in food, the innovative character and the maturity reached today by the platform allow Fermentalg to prepare the industrialization of new functional solutions with high added value addressing new market segments:

  • an antioxidant bioactive in nutraceuticals;

  • a superfood rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals in the animal nutrition markets (petfood, aquafeed) or specialized for specific audiences, such as athletes or seniors.

Microalgal fermentation for a new generation of ingredients

Nutritional benefit and contribution to health and well-being are crucial issues in food. Today, they must also be addressed by solutions limiting the impact on biodiversity and the climate, favorable to the preservation of natural ecosystems.

Through its bioindustrial innovations, Fermentalg is firmly committed to an economic development approach that respects its environment, like the signatory countries of COP-15.

are committed to it by 2050. Among the priorities set for the current decade are the preservation of natural and fishery resources, better traceability, the circular economy and the valorization of co-products, as well as preventive nutrition or the agro-ecological transition.

Faced with these challenges, Bpifrance wishes to promote the development of healthier, more sustainable foods that meet consumer expectations, in particular through the reduction or substitution of additives and technological auxiliaries from petro-based chemicals. It is also a question of developing new sources of vegetable proteins produced in our territories to contribute to the food sovereignty of our country.

In a desire to support innovations targeting high-growth target markets and responding to major societal challenges, and in a logic of sovereignty to limit dependence on protein imports, Bpifrance awarded Fermentalg a grant of 4.4 M€ as part of the 4

th

future investment program of the “France 2030” plan.

On this occasion, Philippe Lavielle, CEO of Fermentalg, declared: “

The exploitation of microalgae by fermentation offers a very broad field of application for a more responsible, safer and more functional diet. This development is made possible thanks to the tremendous commitment of all economic players and we are proud to put our expertise in marine biology at the service of this cause which is essential to the sustainable health of our planet and of future generations. Thanks to this support, we will be able to accelerate the development of applications from our second platform and thus continue to enrich our product offering. »
