Shortly after 6 p.m., several unknown people physically attacked visitors to a festival on the market square, as the Basel-Stadt public prosecutor announced later on Sunday evening. Several people suffered injuries as a result.

Criminal police open proceedings and investigate

According to the investigations of the criminal police, there had already been verbal provocations against the festival visitors in the old town of Basel in the afternoon. The physical attack finally took place in the evening.

Those arrested are Turkish nationals between the ages of 24 and 30, it said. Because of the suspicion of assault and bodily harm, the criminal police opened a procedure and are now determining the exact circumstances.

Alleged supporters of the Kurdish PKK

The news platform “20 minutes” reported in the early evening of a “mass brawl” at a Turkish children’s festival on the Basel market square, which had been attacked by Kurdish PKK supporters.

Police spokesman Martin Schütz did not want to comment on this, according to the SDA news agency. The “Basler Zeitung” later wrote that the canton police had now confirmed that “around 5:30 p.m. some “supporters of the Kurdish PKK” had attacked.
