Festival premiere – Grubinger plays Grubinger

A completely different side of classical music naturally opens up at the Salzburg Festival when percussion stars like Martin Grubinger and his twelve-person ensemble are at work. On Sunday (from 8 p.m.) in the Felsenreitschule, the focus will be on those composers whose pieces can be found at the top of the “hit parade” of the percussion scene: Iannis Xenakis (“Kassandra” with a somewhat weird baritone vocal part by Georg Nigl) , Edgar Varèses highlight “Ionisation”, Peter Eötvös, Maki Ishii, Casey Cangelosi and others – but also a highly anticipated world premiere. The composition “The Numbers of Fate” comes from Martin Grubinger himself. “In terms of musical style, the piece doesn’t quite match the others, but we’ll play it as an encore,” reveals the Salzburg multi-percussionist, who has been a regular festival guest since 2008.
