Festival time! – The vacationers are back in the city center

Just in time for the start of the festival, it is back to peak activity in Salzburg. The hotels in the old town are far better booked than in the previous year, and tourists are bustling in the streets and alleys.

Tourists strolling through Getreidegasse with a guide under their arm. Full terraces in front of the bars and coffeehouses in the city center. Cars with foreign registration numbers parked in front of the hotels in the old town. You could almost forget the turmoil of the corona pandemic if you are currently strolling through the city of Mozart. Just in time for the start of the festival – tomorrow, Sunday, the official opening will take place with the ceremony – the tourists and vacationers are back in Salzburg. “It’s a lot busier than it was three weeks ago. We really shouldn’t complain, ”says Karl-Heinz Dickinger, managing director at Café Glockenspiel.

This impression can be substantiated with numbers. Last June, almost 100,000 overnight stays were recorded in the city of Salzburg – 40 percent more than in the same period in 2020. A further increase in overnight stays is expected for July, “Krone” reported.

Before the pandemic, the number of overnight stays was, of course, much higher. And yet: the streets and alleys of the city center are packed to the brim. In many restaurants and coffeehouses it was difficult to get a seat on Saturday.
