Fewer doses than expected: practices get J&J vaccine later

Fewer doses than expected
Practices don’t get J&J vaccine until later

The vaccination campaign in Germany threatens the next damper: Pharma manufacturer Johnson & Johnson does not deliver as expected. The doctor’s offices therefore only receive the vaccine later. But with the help of another vaccine, the gap can be bridged, according to the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians – for the time being.

An upcoming delivery of the vaccine from the US manufacturer Johnson & Johnson to Germany is expected to be smaller than originally expected. The Federal Ministry of Health announced. The first delivery after the start of the Johnson & Johnson delivery has arrived in Germany and will be distributed to the countries.

According to a report by “Spiegel”, 444,000 cans should actually arrive with the second delivery after a good 250,000 with the first. The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians had indicated that the preparation from Johnson & Johnson would not be in the doctor’s office in the first week of May. “In return, the contract doctors will receive more vaccine from Astrazeneca, so that the announced delivery volume of around three million doses will remain unchanged.” According to the KBV, contract doctors can order around 1.6 million doses from Biontech / Pfizer and 1.4 million from Astrazeneca for the coming week.

The “Rheinische Post” also reported on it. The head of the North Rhine Pharmacists’ Association, Thomas Preis, called the back and forth unnecessary in the newspaper with a view to Johnson & Johnson. The vaccination campaign could get a damper. According to the Ministry of Health, the manufacturers have promised a total of 80 million vaccine doses for the entire current second quarter, of which around 50 million will come from Biontech / Pfizer.

Health Minister Jens Spahn from the CDU announced on Friday that Biontech delivers very reliably. Johnson & Johnson made a delivery promise of ten million cans for the second quarter. The ministry expects that the promise will be kept. “The vaccination doses will be inoculated in the doctor’s offices from May,” said a spokesman.
