Fewer femicides during confinement?

Marlène Schiappa returns to domestic violence during confinement. If there have been many more reports, there may also have been fewer feminicides.

The assessment of domestic violence during confinement is very mixed. Marlène Schiappa returned to this Thursday morning on France Inter, explaining that the platform dedicated to domestic violence had received five times more reports during the two months of confinement. The number of complaints also increased sharply, by 36%, during these eight weeks.

However, there were fewer deaths of women victims of domestic violence during confinement. "There would have been, I put a lot of quotes and a lot of caution, fewer feminicides than usual"says Marlène Schiappa. Secretary of State for Gender Equality Remains "very careful" because of "dramatic situations that we could potentially discover", "because all the doors have not yet reopened". "For now, we would be femicide every 4.2 or 4.4 days ", while "usually", there is rather a feminicide "every three days, or even every 2.5 days".

Victim protection also appears to have been more effective than usual. Thus, the eviction of the violent spouse from the home was faster: "on average it took three hours to find accommodation", against "more than 48 hours ago", explains Marlène Schiappa on France Inter. The telephone line for men and women "who feel they have fits of anger, of violence" and who wish to benefit from psychological support received 200 calls during confinement.

At the time of deconfinement, the Secretary of State dreads "that there are more feminicides" and an "decompensation" violence against women. A plan to fight street harassment will therefore be put in place on Monday. Marlène Schiappa wants "bus stops on request" are generalized in the evening and at night. With the "ask Angela" device, she plans to develop a network of safe places. "When you are in danger, a man follows you in the street, you feel threatened, you take refuge in a partner place", she explains. Finally, she will reunite "in the next weeks" the different VTC services so that"a module to combat sexual and gender-based violence" be created in the exam to become a driver.
