Before the release of the new Dawntrail expansion in a few months, Square Enix is offering certain players the opportunity to discover FF14 for free.

FF14 free in February 2024, but not for everyone
FF14 is an MMO which is part of the cult saga of Square Enix and which, like others of its ilk, is based on a subscription model with several formulas. Prices vary from €10.99 to €12.99 per month with different accesses and durations. The cheapest plan, in the standard version, allows for example to have up to 40 characters in total, and eight per server. But to attract subscribers, the publisher also offers a trial version to get a good idea of what FF14 is. And soon, Xbox Series players will finally be able to enjoy it.
Last year, Phil Spencer, boss of Xbox, appeared alongside Naoki Yoshida (producer of Final Fantasy 14) and Takashi Kiryu (president of Square Enix) to announce an Xbox Series version of FF14 with a beta at the Update 6.55 is approaching. This will indeed be the case since it will begin from the Wednesday February 21, 2024 around 9 a.m., but only on the latest Microsoft consoles. And be careful, because regulars will not have access to it.
Indeed, the FF14 beta on Xbox Series X|S is only intended for new players, and not for those who already have an account and the bottle. If you are curious about the results of this version, you will have to settle for videos on YouTube. “Players who have the Final Fantasy XIV free trial registered for another platform on their Square Enix account as well as players who already have an FF14 license on their Square Enix account will not be able to participate in the open beta” specifies the official press release.
For others who are on PS4, PS5 or PC, a new free connection campaign is available until February 21, 2024 at 3:59 p.m. (French time), but you must not have taken out a subscription during the last thirty days. And to discover FF14 for free on Xbox Series X|S, how do we do it? Square Enix explained the very classic procedures.
- To make sure everything works, go to your Xbox’s privacy settings, then to the “Communication and multiplayer” section.
- Then make the following settings:
- “You can participate in multiplayer games”: allow
- “You can participate in cross-network games”: allow
- “Others can communicate by voice, in writing or by invitation”: everyone
- “You can communicate outside of the Xbox network via voice and text”: everyone
- Return to “View details and customize”, and “Game content”
- “You can view and download community creations”: everyone
- Go to the Xbox Store to search and download the FF14 beta
Finally, know that your investment in this beta will not be in vain. The Japanese publisher indicates that “the data from FF14 will be transferred and you will not need to download the game again”. No need to redownload dozens of GB, nor to restart from scratch obviously since the progress should be repatriated. Two excellent news! As for the possibility of Final Fantasy 14 becoming free to play, don’t count on it too much, producer Naoki Yoshida having closed the door to such an eventuality.
