FF7 Rebirth at the heart of a controversy, players are furious

FF7 Rebirth, the sequel to the remake released in 2020, is currently at the heart of a controversy which is angering players. But what could have happened?

FF7 Rebirth arrives on February 28, and impatience is starting to be felt within the community. We don’t have long to wait before we get our hands on it, and that’s news that makes you smile. In the video game sphere, tributes are sometimes dedicated to the franchise and the seventh opus. Moreover, at the moment, a certain game is organizing an event in anticipation of the release of the next chapter of the remake. Unfortunately, it angered fans.

A partnership between FF7 Rebirth and Apex Legends that is very disturbing

It was Apex Legends that set up a sort of celebration in honor of FF7 Rebirth. As a reminder, this is a battle royale developed by Respawn Entertainment, and which is free-to-play. Despite this status, it sits at the top of the biggest sales on the platform thanks to its in-game purchases. And precisely, they are the ones who are at the center of the current controversy. The reason is simple, the homage to Final Fantasy VII was also an opportunity for the thinking heads behind the game to warm up the players’ credit. The problem is that you have to pay a lot of money.

On the menu, it is possible to unlock cosmetics and skins on the theme of FF7 Rebirth. To obtain cosmetics, you must purchase an “event” pack for 1,000 Apex Coins (the in-game currency), or €10. From what we have been able to understand, there is already a concern at this level, because it was not as expensive before. We were more around €7. This is a big change, even if the first box is free, while the second offers a -90% reduction (then we go to -50% and -30%). But there is a catch to all this.

Indeed, there are two cosmetics that have been the talk of the town. This is the “Death Box” in the colors of Sephiroth, the antagonist of FF7, and the Buster Sword R5 Mythic. To obtain it, you must have obtained the 36 other items from the crossover. If we do the math with the purchase of the packs to get to this stage, we easily approach €300-350. As we said above, the more packs you buy, the less attractive the discounts are. Once you have reached 16 out of 36 items in the partnership, you have to pay out €10 each time. The offer therefore seems attractive at first glance, but this is not the case if you want to have everything.

Retaliation on the average of the game

This event and the complaints that followed caused Apex Legends’ average on Steam to drop. Instead of being at a score of “Mostly Positive,” its recent reviews now read “Average.” This is a way for players to express their dissatisfaction, even if it is theoretically feasible to recover these items for free. But it takes time, a lot of time. You should also keep in mind that the drop rates are very low. For the Buster Sword, we are talking about a chance percentage of less than 1%.

In itself, it wasn’t a bad idea to welcome the release of FF7 Rebirth. However, this way of doing things was clearly not to the taste of the community who did not wish to empty their wallets further. She would also have liked a greater number of free rewards. In this case, there are 3 “event” packs offered, allowing you to save 3,000 Apex Coins.
