FF8 Remake soon a reality? Expect big changes

The producer of FF7 Rebirth has made a strange statement about a potential FF8 Remake that should change a very specific aspect of its gameplay.

The FF7 remake opened Pandora’s box. Now every gamer would like to have the total overhaul of their favorite Final Fantasy. So, the rumors are rife. We are thinking in particular of those on the ninth opus, but for some, it is the 8 which will pass there with its FF8 Remake. For the moment, nothing has been confirmed, but given the success of the return of Cloud and his gang, it is a possibility. Moreover, the producer of Rebirth has just given a speech that was to say the least… strange, but which delighted some fans.

FF8 Remake? Okay, but the combat system will have to change

In truth, we are deliberately exaggerating the line a little. Yoshinori Kitase would never have thrown out such a clue during an interview for IGN. However, it allows some people to find hope. The FF8 remake is in high demand, but Square Enix doesn’t seem to be up for putting it together. Or maybe he’s doing it, but he’s keeping it a secret. Let’s imagine that this is the case for a moment, and that the producer of Rebirth is one of the minds behind the project. Expect a big change.

First of all, there’s a logical reason why Kitase mentioned an FF8 remake. In fact, this month of February 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the game. In any case, if an overhaul were to see the light of day, he would like to modify the combat system. To be more precise, it is the “association” mechanics that he would like to rework.

I think you remember that we had the matchmaking system in Final Fantasy 8. The principle of this system was that enemies leveled up based on the player’s level. It was therefore necessary to use the Junction system and customize it to meet the challenge. I think it was a very difficult system for some to understand.

So I think I would like to come back to this point and rework the combat system of [Final Fantasy 8] in order to better balance the level of difficulty and ease of access for certain fans

A remake is no easy feat

But then, could a remake of FF8 be in the works? Don’t count on it too much. The producer himself stated that it is a considerable undertaking. “I realized that trying to recreate the volume of content from RPGs of the era today is definitely not something you can take lightly ” he told IGN. We still remember that he proclaimed that a total overhaul of Final Fantasy 6 would take, at least, around twenty years. You get the idea, for the moment, it’s better to be patient. Especially since the FF7 remake is divided into three parts, and we have only reached the second.
