FIFA 22: FUT is ultimately not a gambling game, according to Dutch authorities

For many years, a multitude of people have asked that FIFA’s Ultimate Team mode is considered gambling, given that each year players can spend hundreds or even thousands of euros in the purchase of packs. Only, buying a pack of cards does not guarantee getting one of the best players in the game, since the content is completely random.

This is why several authorities, including the Netherlands, had looked into the subject, with a decision rendered in 2020 stipulating that FUT was a gambling game. The developers had been fined 500,000 euros per week as long as the packs in question remained in the store, EA having chosen not to withdraw them, since it had appealed.

After revisiting the subject a while ago, a Dutch court has finally overturned this first decision, and FUT is no longer considered gambling. In fact, the fine imposed on EA Sports, up to 10 million euros, is canceled. According to the decision, these packs are only part of the game and add ” an element of chance “.

The vast majority of packs are obtained by and used for participation in the game. » can we also read. On his side, EA Sports is obviously delighted with this decision.which ” confirms our belief that no aspect of FIFA or FIFA Ultimate Team can be considered gambling under Dutch law “.

That doesn’t mean the developers are done with these gambling accusations though, given that other countries, like Belgium and the UK, have FUT in their sights. In France, several players filed a complaint, in 2020, based on the randomness of the packs. For the moment, the FUT mode is not worried here, especially since EA Sports has made some efforts to limit the spending of money by players.
