“FIFA 22” brings back well-known treasures and tries out new online modes. What changes in the new part.

Every year, “FIFA” is a new offshoot of the world’s largest gaming simulation for football enthusiasts. Because the number of platforms on which the title appears is growing, it is easy to lose track of things. These are the most important changes.

Hypermotion

The animations in “FIFA 22” are given a makeover, but only on the next-gen consoles. So if you own a Playstation 5 or Xbox Series X or S, you can look forward to smoother animations that are rendered in real time. However, this requires more computing power, which the Playstation 4 and Xbox One do not have. The PC version is also a port of the current-gen version.

Instead, what at first glance appears to be a small innovation is about to fundamentally upgrade the feel of “FIFA 22”. Thanks to Hypermotion and more than 4,000 new animations, the overall feel of the game is more realistic, even if some of the animations are only noticeable if you pay special attention to them.

Goalkeeper discussion point

EA Sports has completely redesigned the goalkeeper AI. If the goalkeeper was previously only a better extra and can usually be overcome with simple tricks, goalkeepers now guard the box, who can also thwart great chances. This led to frustration and discussions among the players in the early access phase – but also to praise and recognition as a step in the right direction. It remains to be seen to what extent the developers will adjust this by means of a patch. At the time of release, the keepers are the secret stars of “FIFA 22”.

Career mode in a new guise

“FIFA 22” finally arrives in the modern age as far as its career mode is concerned. New are both different archetypes that players have to define for their pixel kicker. There are also specific skills that are created on a skills tree. In addition, it is finally possible to be a substitute and fight for the starting XI. On top of that, EA Sports donated more atmospheric cutscenes than before, which gives the mode further depth.

A special treat is the “Create Your Club” feature, which is part of the game for the first time since “FIFA 07” from 2006. Players can create their own club here, from the logo to the name to the jersey and the stadium. In the manager career mode, they can then lead them to the top of the world.

Volta mode loosens up online gaming

In contrast to regular online games, in which things are usually dogged, with “Volta” the focus is on having fun. The arcade-heavy gameplay goes in the direction of the earlier “FIFA Street”, but offers more than tricky games on the small field. Eight mini-games are available for the release of “FIFA 22”, including soccer tennis and dodge ball. They are all entertaining and are aimed at gamers who are currently not in the mood for tough simulations.

Crossplay

The “FIFA” players have to cut back when it comes to crossplay. Neither within a console family, for example PS4 and PS5, nor between the Playstation, XBox or PC systems, gamers can compete against each other. It is only possible to load the PS4 version on the PS5 and play with friends with the current generation. This also works in the same way with Microsoft’s XBox. There is also no need for a free upgrade to the next-gen version when purchasing a current-gen “FIFA”. Only those who buy the “Ultimate Edition” will get both versions.
