FIFA 23 will still have its lootbox system in FIFA Ultimate Team, and EA is happy about it

Lootboxes are still a hot topic today. If some licenses decide to drop them, like Overwatch, others choose to keep them despite the strengthening of certain laws in Europe. Some of the most well-known lootbox users include Electronic Arts and its famous fashion FIFA Ultimate Team, which has been maligned for several years but continues to bring in tons of dollars for the publisher. And that’s why he’s not going to ignore it in FIFA 23.

Because it’s in the game

Eurogamer has contacted Electronic Arts about this, as the publisher recently received the agreement of the English government, which does not intend to legislate this economic system in the game. Pleased with this decision. EA said FUT would be back in FIFA 23always with his lootboxes that he tries to justify :

We wholeheartedly believe that the Ultimate Team and FUT packs, which have been in the game for over a decade, are part of what players love about FIFA – fans love that the game reflects the excitement and strategy of the game. real world of building and managing a team. Giving players the choice to spend if they wish is fair. It is necessary to say that spending is entirely optional in our game, and we do not encourage spending over earning rewards through play.. FUT packs work the same whether paid or earned, and most players don’t spend in-game. For example, nine out of 10 FUT packs opened in FIFA 22 have been earned. »

Obviously, EA dodges here the question of chance in what we buy, which is the main criticism of lootboxes. It remains to be seen how this mode will evolve in the future, since what is certain is that it should change its name since EA will no longer own the FIFA rights.

FIFA 23 is expected for September 30 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series and Switch. The game is already available for pre-order.
