Fight against violence against women: Macron calls not to “slacken the effort”

Emmanuel Macron called on Friday in Côte-d’Or not to “slacken the effort” in the fight against violence against women, believing that it was necessary to improve training and prevention despite significant “collective progress”. The Head of State attended a simulation exercise at the Dijon Gendarmerie School of an intervention by the police with a woman who called for help because of a violent husband. The gendarmes staged the arrest of the man and, above all, the care of the woman and her securing, with her children.

More than 90% of the measures decided in 2019 implemented

“There has nevertheless been collective progress”, with “a huge job of training our internal security forces”, welcomed Emmanuel Macron during a round table with all the stakeholders in the sector, on the occasion of the international day for the elimination of violence against women. This theme, and more broadly equality between men and women, has been declared a “great cause” for its two five-year terms. “We must not relax the effort”, however insisted the president.

More than 90% of the measures decided at the end of the Grenelle against domestic violence, at the end of 2019, are “completely implemented”, we welcome at the Elysée. Emmanuel Macron recalled the possibility of collecting complaints at the hospital or in a “third place” and the multiplication of prevention devices such as “anti-reconciliation bracelets”.

Parliamentary work in progress for specialized courts

Asked by the press about the establishment of specialized courts, he recalled that parliamentary work was underway in this direction. “I’m not abandoning the idea at all, we need it, we have to be very ambitious and put in the maximum of resources,” he said. “But you have to be careful not to have one or two people who, in a department, would only deal with this subject”, “everyone has to improve their skills, everyone absolutely has to be better trained on the subject of violence against women,” he added.

The National Solidarity Women Federation (FNSF), which manages the 3919 call number, reported this week a 14% increase in calls in 2021, compared to 2019. This line, open 24 hours a day and 7 days out of 7 since mid-2021, receives between 10,000 and 12,000 calls monthly. Nearly one in five callers report having been threatened with death, a rate that has doubled since 2019, according to the FNSF.
