FILMO: these first films will make you want to follow the careers of these 2 directors

A platform tailored for cinephiles, FILMO is enriching its catalog with 2 exclusives: Board Games and The New Girl, not to mention thematic cycles punctuated by cult films. Focus on the tailor-made program for your evenings under a plaid.

A group of old friends in their thirties gather in a seaside villa for the birthday of one of their own. The opportunity to settle old accounts to finally move on to adulthood…

My friends, my loves, my shit…”: the words of Charles Aznavour’s famous hit could sum up Jeux de Société. With Jenni Toivoniemi at her helm, both in terms of direction and screenplay, this modern and unapologetic comedy introduces us to the stay of a group of friends.

Like a little mouse, we are spectators of the laughter, little secrets, revelations, evocations of memories and vision of the future of this band with which we could all identify. Embodied by famous names in Finnish cinema such as Laura Birn (The Boy Queen) and Eero Milonoff (Border), but also Christian Hillborg (The Playlist), Paula Vesala (The Unknown Soldier) and Iida-Maria Heinonen (Deadwind), these thirties offer us a look at the passage of time and its effects on our relationships.

Sometimes moving, often funny, but always fair, this madly modern chronicle allows itself almost anything in a feminine and unapologetic approach that does a world of good. It is therefore not surprising that Board Games won two prizes at the Jussi, the equivalent of the Césars in Finland. A delicious appetizer for a director who is not about to leave us hungry!

Jimena travels to Río Grande, on the island of Tierra del Fuego, in the far south of Argentina, to join her half-brother Mariano. She has almost no money for her ticket, but manages to travel, with the hope of making a fresh start in this manufacturing region.

The wind, the cold and the complex economic crisis form the backdrop in which Jimena will develop her empathy and her sense of belonging towards the people around her, as well as the place where she will learn to recognize herself.

The first film by Argentinian filmmaker Micaela Gonzalo, La Nouvelle Fille is part of the cinema of the Dardenne brothers or Ken Loach, exploring social and economic themes. Through a naturalistic vision, we follow the destiny of this young woman, and more generally of the youth caught in the clutches of neo-liberal society.

Carried brilliantly by the magnetic Mora Arenillas who is taking her first steps in front of the camera here, the feature film received the Grand Prix Coup de Coeur at the Cinélatino Festival in Toulouse, in 2021. Allowing its main actress to reveal all her talent, La Nouvelle Fille also shines its spotlight on its director.

She pays particular attention to the staging and succeeds with great finesse in bringing her story to life. A first film which, we hope, will not be the last!
