Final Fantasy 16: We know why it won’t be an open world

It continues to stir around the license Final Fantasy and my faith, it is not to displease us. Indeed, at the beginning of summer, Square Enix has been very vocal about the next entries in one of its most cult sagas: between the first details on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, but also a lot of information about Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, it sends heavy. And it continues, with a new speech by the daron of the excellent CBU3 in an interview for Famitsu magazine, transcribed by VGC.

No open world, why?

Simply because the team behind the game can’t do everything. Yoshida jokes that designing an open world for FF16 would have taken about fifteen years : according to the configuration of his team, the ambitions of the game, or even simply the desire to release a well-finished game within a manageable deadline, then the open world is a trap in which Yoshi P. does not want to fall. Wise and very transparent words on the way this new episode is designed, for a communication that would almost make us forget the ordeal of that of Final Fantasy XV. Finally, the producer confesses that the choice of an action gameplay compared to the old turn-based was made to attract a younger audience, which no longer frankly finds interest in this kind of mechanics.

A wise choice

The reasons that pushed Naoki Yoshida and his teams to rule out the open world is surely due to the events that will occur in certain areas of the game : Eikon’s battles will be able to upset landscapes and destroy entire villages. In the same vein, we know that the title will take place over several eras and therefore that the landscapes and kingdoms are likely to evolve as Clive ages. These are just guesses, but given the monster dynamism infused into its action-packed combat and Creative Business Unit 3’s desire to give us a fast-paced, cinematic adventure, then this orientation “by zone” is surely the best alternative, and will surely spare us, in passing, a map full of superfluous activities.
