Final Fantasy Tactics: Matsuno plays with “what if?” on a potential remaster

Sometimes, rather than speculating excessively without concrete information, the best thing is to go directly to question the main stakeholders. Yasumi Matsuno, who can easily be considered the main architect behind the universe of Ivalice developed in Vagrant Story, Ogre Tactics, Final Fantasy XII Or Final Fantasy Tacticswas asked by players about a potential port of Vagrant Story on Nintendo Switch. The screenwriter’s answer is undoubtedly the most unsatisfactory possible: “Heaven only knows”. However, afterward, another Twitter follower busied himself with signaling his eagerness for the potential remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics. What Matsuno made himself much less cryptic than for Vagrant Story : “If we remaster it, what do you think about whether it is better to weaken The Thunder God Cid, who was accused of destroying the balance?” (“If we were to do a remaster of the game, what do you think about weakening Cid, who was accused of destroying the balance?“).

Cid may pass

In no way does Matsuno confirm here the existence of a remaster project for FF Tactics, but his very specific question on a particular aspect of the gameplay (in this case the balancing) is sure to revive the rumors. Cid was indeed considered far too powerful in the original experience, even causing many players to simply avoid using him, for fear of making the game far too easy to navigate. It was a widely commented issue at the time, and to come back to such an aspect of the game with a “and if ?” seems to indicate that there is indeed a good chance that the title is currently in development. We recall that last February, the affable Jason Schreier of Bloomberg was able to report that the return of the title was approachingwithout specifying if it would be a remake or a remaster of the original game or the version War of The Lions. The recent success of Tactics Ogre Reborn leaves whatever happens to think that the return of the most popular Final Fantasy Tactics should be welcomed in a similar way. It remains to be determined what form this return will take: some seem to be hoping for a remake in HD-2D, the Asano team having already passed the remake test with Live-A-Live last year.
