After the PlayStation Portal, Sony would like to launch a real portable console such as Steam Deck. But this new generation PSP would be limited to games ported to PC in terms of catalog.
Since the start of the year, there have been reports of a project for a new portable console from PlayStation. On his Telegram channel, journalist and videographer Anton Logvinov puts a coin back into the machine. If we pay some attention to his words, it is because he was one of the first to mention a PC release for PlayStation games until now exclusive to Sony consoles.
According to him, this new generation PSP would be able to run PS4 games locally. It would therefore not be a question of enjoying the most recent games on the portable console, unless it is open to cloud gaming. The catalog promises to be limited in any case since the only compatible games would be those which benefit from a PC version.
A portable PlayStation console like Steam Deck
If he assures that he can confirm that Sony is indeed working on such a project, he specifies that distributors and retailers are currently skeptical about the existence of such a product. This means that if the portable console is indeed in development, which we can still doubt, it is still far from being ready since its partners are not a priori aware of anything.
Last February, it was the YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead which mentioned a potential PlayStation Portable. A system powered by an AMD APU and designed to ensure compatibility with PS4 games, but also PS5, was then cited. Thanks to the progress made by AMD, many portable consoles have arrived on the market recently: Valve’s Steam Deck of course, but also Asus’ ROG Ally, or the more controversial MSI Claw.
We therefore know that it is technically possible to develop a portable console capable of running large games, even if autonomy remains a problem. Many gamers who were expecting a successor to the PSP and PS Vita were disappointed by the PlayStation Portal, which is more of a connected display integrated into a DualSense controller. After testing the market, would Sony finally launch a real portable console?
