finals in saber, judo and rugby sevens for France

All the news from Tokyo on a platter

You who have just joined us, here is the (good) news that you missed last night:

  • The French triathlon won its first medal among able-bodied. The French team won bronze in the mixed triathlon after a strong comeback in the last two stints. Vincent Luis even believed he could go for gold after the bike part but was left behind by Briton Alex Yee and American Morgan Pearson in the run.
  • Charline Picon finished first in the last sailing race, the “medal race”, but that was not enough to win a second Olympic coronation: La Rochelaise finished second in the general classification, and obtained silver. Same place among men for Thomas Goyard, after a last race rich in rebounds and disqualifications.

The team judo final. Teddy Riner and his gang are up against the Japanese, not before 10:30 a.m.

The final of rugby sevens, where the French face New Zealand, at 11 am.

The team saber final, where France plays the gold medal against the Russians, scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

What happened :

  • On pole vault, we were afraid for Renaud Lavillenie who suffered to pass 5m50 and 5m65. Despite a serious ankle injury two weeks ago, the former world record holder is in the final
  • In swimming, Florent Manaudou is also in the final after a very convincing 50 m freestyle. First in his semi-final in 21.53, he set the best time of his season. But he will find in the final tomorrow the formidable Caeleb Dressel who won his semi-final just after winning gold in the 100-meter butterfly.
  • Still in swimming, Katie Ledecky was crowned for the third time in a row in the 800-meter freestyle while Australian Kaylee McKeown, already titled in the 100-meter backstroke, won the 200-meter backstroke.
  • In basketball, the French won their third match of the Olympic tournament, this time against Iran (79-62). Qualification for the quarter-finals was assured before the match
  • Disappointment for Sofiane Oumiha in boxing. The silver medalist in Rio was eliminated in the round of 16 in the -63 kilograms by American Keyshawn Davis. The referee ended the fight after the Frenchman was hit by a big right hook. Yet he was receptive to the count. The decision is controversial.
  • Disappointment also for the Blue handball, beaten by the Russians (28-27). The France team will play for its qualification in the quarter-finals on its last match.
  • Novak Djokovic’s third-place match against Pablo Carreno Busta. The two players are tied for one set everywhere.
